Accountant By Day
response to a prompt to write about a struggling actor
He waits in rooms that smell like stale applause,
headshots grinning bigger than he feels inside,
a face that’s never quite “what we’re looking for,”
a résumé padded with fluff and nonsense.
He has the heat but these directors are so cold.
Their eyes move past him like he’s already gone.
He tells himself he’s perfect for the role.
He counts his worth in callbacks that don’t call.
Numbers by day, dreams divided in columns.
An accountant balancing strangers’ futures,
while his own life slips deeper into debt.
Competition floods in, brighter, bolder, younger.
Each “no” a statement he can’t balance.
Bills stack like scripts he’ll never get to read,
and hunger starts rewriting all his lines.
He tells himself he’s perfect for the role.
So when a camera comes with an offer,
no monologues, no critics, just a check,
he tells himself it’s just a smaller screen,
still a performance, only… different pretending,
and somewhere between shame and survival,
he’s fully exposed with and without clothes.
He tells himself he’s perfect for the role.

When I was six or seven, my stepdad came into my life, and I remember thinking he knew everything. He could befriend anybody, anywhere. In grocery stores, he chatted with strangers over cuts of meat; at gas stations, he bonded with people pumping fuel over how the smell of gasoline was disgusting and yet enjoyable. In restaurants, he took an interest in waiters’ lives—like Steve, whose father was dying of cancer. When Steve’s dad died, my new dad attended the funeral.

History of The Three Stooges (Part I: The Beginnings and Columbia Pictures - 1920s-1936)
I have been itching to write about The Three Stooges on Vocal for close to two years, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I wanted to do it by third Stooge, but that's a bit complicated. I know this much. I was about eight or nine years old when I first saw The Three Stooges. I remember one of my local channels had the Stooges on for hours, and I tried my damnedest to be up for those shorts. I remember that the Family Channel actually had an hour of the Stooges on from 11PM to midnight, and it was the entire library on during that time.
