LHS Class of 01 The Reunion
Peter halted a few steps away, his eyebrows knitting together as he scanned their faces for any hint of the story that must have drawn them together. “What’s happening?” he asked, his voice low enough not to disturb the surrounding chatter, yet infused with a genuine concern that made his words land with an uncharacteristic weight. Joan offered a weary smile, the lines around her eyes deepening, while Emily’s gaze lingered on Peter’s shoes before she finally met his eyes, as though gauging how much to reveal. Megan, however, broke the tentative stalemate with a sharp inhale, her eyes flashing a mixture of empathy and urgency. “It’s Valerie,” she began, her tone threaded with the gravity of the news she carried, “and she’s divorcing Francis. It’s… it’s happening now, and everyone’s trying to figure out what that means for the rest of us.”

Megan’s eyes flickered back to Joan, searching for a glimmer of understanding, while Emily’s posture shifted, the investigative angle of her mind transitioning into a protective stance. “Why didn’t anyone tell us?” Joan asked, her tone now layered with a mixture of guilt and astonishment, as if the news should have been a communal warning rather than a private burden. Emily, ever the pragmatic voice, added, “I always thought there was something going on with him. Back when you two dated and he went to date Valerie” Emily says to Megan. “Don’t remind me,” Megan replies. The school gym’s ambient chatter seemed to crescendo, echoing the turmoil within the group, as Megan pressed her palms together, feeling the tremor of her own anxiety. She explained that Valerie had confided in her just the day before, whispering through sobs that Francis had become increasingly distant, even to the point that he spent some time with a co-worker and exchanged texts with her for over a year. “She’s terrified of the legal battle and the fallout,” Megan said, her voice cracking slightly, “but she also can’t bring herself to walk away without a safety net, and she knows I’ll be there for her.”

In the lingering silence, Megan felt a surprising swell of empathy, a recognition that the bitterness they had both cultivated over the years had been a shared defense against their own insecurities. “I’m sorry you’ve had to go through that,” she said, her tone softer than she had intended, the words sliding out like a tentative bridge across a chasm of former animosity. “Leaving someone you’ve built a life with isn’t easy, but it sounds like you’ve finally found the strength to choose what’s right for you.” Valerie gave a faint, grateful smile, the kind that seemed to release some of the tension coiled around her shoulders. As the two women stood there, the distant sound of a band beginning to play a familiar song, the reunion took on a new dimension—one where old wounds could be acknowledged, where former enemies could glimpse a shared humanity, and where the simple act of speaking truth could, at last, transform rivalry into a quiet, unexpected camaraderie.

Megan lingered beneath the flickering string lights of the community hall, the hum of clinking glasses and half‑remembered laughter weaving around her like a familiar tapestry. She had arrived early, hoping the anonymity of the early hour would allow her to observe the shifting dynamics of the once‑tight circle without the pressure of an immediate greeting. The reunion was meant to be a celebration of the decade that had passed since graduation, a chance for old friends to reconnect, but for Megan it also represented an uneasy truce with the past—a past that still held the sharp sting of Valerie's betrayal when she had spread rumors that nearly ruined Megan’s time at Lincoln. As she scanned the room, a sense of quiet anticipation settled over her, a feeling that something, or someone, would soon disturb the fragile equilibrium she had painstakingly built.

“I can’t believe they’re actually here,” he whispered to himself, feeling a surge of anticipation that mixed with the faint scent of stale gym mats and fresh rosemary from the catering staff. In that moment, the years melted away, and the teenage versions of himself, Peter and Scott, seemed to be waiting just beyond the rim of the glass.

LHS Class of 01 The Reunion
As the venue—a refurbished community hall with twinkling fairy lights draped across its vaulted ceiling—came into view, Joan felt a flutter of butterflies cascade through her stomach. She adjusted the strap of her dress once more, smoothing the fabric as if it could erase any lingering doubts. “Do you think they’ll still have the same punch bowl?” she asked, half‑joking, half‑curious. Scott glanced at his watch, noting the time, then responded, “If they do, I’ll be the first to dive in—just like we used to do at the cafeteria’s pizza day.” Their laughter, low and genuine, echoed in the car’s interior, a reminder that some parts of their teenage selves still lived beneath the veneer of adulthood.
