Please Stop The War.

A little girl stands at the wire,

her fingers thin and dust covered,

curled around the sharp barbs

as if the fence is the last edge

of a breaking world.

Her dress hangs loose and dirty,

creased with long roads,

creased with nights that did not sleep.

Behind her stands her father,

his back bent with days

that no longer end in peace.

His face is worn with silence,

the kind men carry

when words have nowhere safe to go.

Beside him stands her brother,

already a man now,

though no one asked him

if he wanted to grow this way.

His jaw is tight,

his hands empty but ready,

his eyes fixed somewhere far away

where the smoke climbs slowly

into a wounded sky.

The wind slips through the wire

and the metal trembles quietly,

a thin cold sound across a broken field.

The girl lifts her face.

Dust rests on her lashes,

but her eyes are wide,

wide enough to hold

every fear she has seen today.

She does not understand borders,

or the voices of leaders,

or why the sky sometimes

opens with thunder and fire.

She only knows

her father is tired,

her brother carries anger

he never had as a boy,

and the ground remembers

every falling bomb.

Her small hands grip the wire.

Her voice rises

from somewhere brave and shaking.

Please stop the war. Please do not kill us.

The words float through the barbed fence

like something fragile and human,

something the world

should never have forced

a child to say.

And for a moment

in the wide and trembling silence,

a little girl stands at the wire

asking the earth to let her live.
