i’ve never liked long car rides;
the hours drag on as the world flies by,
legs numb from sitting still in the same spot,
same position,
nothing to do but wait
to arrive at your destination.
but long drives with you are different.
i could search the world and never find someone better-
suited to travel by my side.
with you, there’s always something to occupy the time
and distract the mind from the monotony
of the road —
we sing along to the radio, share comfortable
silence, talk
about the universe, our goals, dreams, hopes, plans.
i think i’ve gotten to know you best
while on the road,
our lives filling the space around us with stories and experience.
i could drive around forever getting to know you
even better,
and never tire of the trip.
