Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

A villanelle celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Chicago Cubs' long overdue championship

By Clyde E. DawkinsPublished about 5 hours ago 1 min read

The Cubs of '16 rose to claim their due,

One hundred eight long years of endless night,

Through drought and goat and shadow, they broke through.

From Wrigley’s ivy walls the faithful grew,

With Bryant’s bat and Rizzo’s steady might,

The Cubs of '16 rose to claim their due.

They stormed the Fall, the comeback bold and true,

Zobrist’s double in the tenth brought pure delight,

Through drought and goat and shadow, they broke through.

The rain delayed Game Seven, yet they knew

The curse would end beneath that stormy fight

The Cubs of '16 rose to claim their due.

Chapman’s fire, Lester’s calm, the young ones flew,

Báez and Russell sparked the comeback light,

Through drought and goat and shadow, they broke through.

In Cleveland’s chill, the final out they drew,

Bryant’s glove closed history, set wrong things right

The Cubs of '16 rose to claim their due,

Through drought and goat and shadow, they broke through.
