Desolation

the foundation rocking

song blowing on the

wind

⋆ ˚。⋆🎐⋆ ˚。⋆

Through my

sea glass chiming

trinket strung

hollow cavity of a

fate-wracked frame

⋆ ˚。⋆🎐⋆ ˚。⋆

I take a ragged

whistling sand-filled

breath rattling my

bones; carved into

time-worn treasures

collected and refurbished

replacing vital organs with

memories of an imagined

better time, never existent

⋆ ˚。⋆🎐⋆ ˚。⋆

The shuddering words

come shrieking forth

uncomfortably loud

yet smooth as silk

slippery like mercury

dolloping from my giraffe-like

neck dripping off

iris-hued lips in wobbling

drops snaking down

eager ear canals

awaiting the shocking

slickness

⋆ ˚。⋆🎐⋆ ˚。⋆

Weaving words into

flowing operatic veils

to obscure the truth

hovering about my

flickering eyes and mouth

⋆ ˚。⋆🎐⋆ ˚。⋆

Working as quickly

as my fiddly fingers

will carry the

golden cocoon-wrapped

wrath pulled and spun into

fine, shiny, silken thread

⋆ ˚。⋆🎐⋆ ˚。⋆

I have an anxious feeling

it’s as plain as

the nose melting off my face

decorated with intricate lace

no one could possibly

parse out what

newly laid tale

I have to say

they nod, laughing

eyes glazed over

quickly bouncing

off on their well-laid way

taking hold of the threads

pulling, causing my

story to fray

This was the fourth poem (the first three were part of the same submission) published after my return to writing. I had several published while in Middle and High school, but was directly discouraged from writing. The consensus amongst my family and friends was that my writing was bad, depressing, and would never get me anywhere. My mother would throw away my notebooks, even delete computer files. So, returning to writing after 20 years, and finding a supportive community and limited success, was shocking to say the least.
