She thumbed through the yearbook until she found his face. Circling it with a red sharpie, she remembered a time she’d do the same to her friends, her crushes. Harmless pre-summer fun.

“Detective?”

“Confirmed. John Tellbuck. Senior.”

John’s white, blank face offered no confirmation.

“Come on. There's more to ID.”

    This took a second to sink in what was happening. The subtle reveal made the emotion of my realization even more chilling. Very nicely done. Too bad I wasn't the one doing the selecting.
